Ideas to Explore

Blogs and wikis can be valuable tools for teachers and students. They provide new ways to share information and to work collaboratively. In this session participants will explore and interact with blogs and wikis. Examples of blogs and wikis used in education will be shared.

Wiki Activity

  1. Spin the wheel for a story starter - http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/storystarters/storystarter1.htm
  2. Click on your group name & follow the directions on the page.
    1. Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 4, Group 5, Group 6, Group 7, Group 8, Group 9, Group 10
  3. Each group with modify and add to another story
  4. Original group will look at revisions and make changes

  • Edmodo - private student/teacher blogging w/built in calendar and assignments - unlimited student accounts
  • Tumblr - easy blogging with no comments - single user blogging

Web Lingo

  • http://www.netlingo.com
  • Embed - Place video, document, audio, photo, etc from another site onto your own. A player or viewer is usually intserted on your site to view or play the content.
  • Upload - Take a personally created video, document, audio, photo, etc from your computer and copy it onto a website for others to view and use.
  • Share - Make something you have online (bookmarks, videos, photos, etc) available for others to view.
  • Tag - Keyword(s) given to an item you have stored online. These keywords help identify the content for search engines and to help keep your information organized.
  • PLN - Personal Learning Network - People that you interact with and gain knowledge from either online and offline. You may never have a face to face meeting with some individuals in your PLN.
  • Mashups - A file or program that contains text, graphics, audio, video, etc from other sources, to create a something new.
  • Cloud computing - Storing your information online rather than on your local computer. Google Docs is an example of cloud computing.
  • Social Media - Online content created by the users of websites such as delicious, facebook, blogs, wikis, YouTube, etc. All content on these social media sites are user created and maintained.
  • Webcast -Broadcasting audio and video over the internet. This type of media can be streamed live or watched after the broadcast is complete.
  • Lifecasting - A continual broadcast of events in a person's life through digital media.
  • RSS Really Simple Syndication - Special code that allows anyone to subscibe to website updates via an RSS reader or email. When a website is updated you are notified.
